Embarking on a Full-Time MBA is not only a decision about choosing the right business school; it's an immersion into an ecosystem that shapes your post-graduate career trajectory.

If the ease of administrative processes and the potential for post-study employment are important considerations, Belgium is an exceptional choice. With the welcoming regulatory environment and 12-month post-graduation residence permit, Belgium facilitates translating academic achievements into career opportunities within the heart of Europe.

Why choose Belgium to launch your international career?

Located in the heart of Europe, Belgium offers easy access to major European cities and business hubs. This strategic location provides unparalleled opportunities for networking and career advancement.

In contrast to many other countries that are tightening their regulations, Belgium is emerging as a beacon of opportunity for experienced international candidates. Although existing rules for obtaining a student visa and subsequent work permits are relatively straightforward, Belgium has recently further simplified its legislative environment for experienced internationals. Examples of recent legislative changes in Belgium include:

  • Simplified calculation of required remuneration thresholds for international workers to qualify for a work permit
  • Fewer formalities for work permit valid for more than one year
  • Unlimited work authorisation granted after 30 months' residence and occupation in the Brussels Capital Region

Belgium’s favourable visa policies allow international talent to stay and work in the country after graduation, giving you the chance to gain valuable international work experience.

Belgium Visa and Work Permit Q&A

Here are some short Q&As for international candidates to consider for studying and launching a career in Belgium.

Do I need a student visa in Belgium?

If you’re from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you’ll need a student visa to study in Belgium. We recommend applying by mid-May. Click here to find out more about the process.

Can I extend my student visa?

Yes. Once in Belgium, you must register at your local municipal authority to receive a residence permit based on studies. Before it expires, you can extend your stay in three ways:

  • Applying for a residence permit extension based on studies (if you add an internship or need to retake a course),
  • Getting an orientation year permit (to search for a job or start a business),
  • Securing a single permit (when you have a job).

For more information, download the International Student Guide for more details.

Do I need a work permit in Belgium?

If you’re from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you’ll need a single permit (which covers both work and residence). Your employer applies for this once you sign the contract. Until then, you can already work under an orientation year permit.  For more information, download the International Student Guide for more details.

What’s an orientation year permit?

Vlerick graduates from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland can apply for a 12-month orientation year permit to seek employment or start a business in Belgium. This permit allows you to work full-time while securing a long-term single permit through an employer.
