The Executive MBA – how long does it take?

Over an 18-month period, you attend classes and learning activities on campus on Fridays and Saturdays, every four weeks. These in-person sessions alternate between Brussels and Ghent. In addition to this face-to-face learning, you’ll need to schedule approximately 10-12 hours a week to prepare for classes, complete projects, and study for exams. When you’re studying certain topics, however, you may need longer – particularly if you’re getting to grips with a subject for the first time. Taking an Executive MBA means making an intense time commitment to the programme.

The Executive MBA typically finishes in April, with graduation in July. To guarantee a high-quality, personalised experience, we have a strict limit on the number of participants we accept each year.

Frequent asked questions

What is an Executive MBA? How is it different from a Full-time MBA?

If you’re weighing up the advantages of an executive MBA vs. an MBA, this section will help you.

An Executive MBA is a part-time MBA programme. They’re typically designed for experienced working professionals who don’t want to put their careers on hold while they study. By contrast, a Full-time MBA is designed for people who have a small amount of work experience, and who can dedicate a year or more to full-time study.

On an Executive MBA programme, you’ll dive into all the same disciplines as a Full-time MBA – but have the flexibility to schedule your studies around a demanding work schedule.

The Executive MBA from Vlerick is a transformative 18-month programme. Throughout your studies, you’ll attend classes at our beautiful Ghent and Brussels campuses on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. These face-to-face sessions take place once every four weeks, and alternate between Brussels and Ghent.

We also offer two other part-time/Executive MBAs:

  • European Executive MBA – A 15-month learning journey that blends on-campus and online learning with immersive learning in sustainable organisations in some of Europe’s leading business cities
  • Online MBA – 100% online, self-paced, highly interactive learning, with the option to complete your degree in 15 or 18 months.

What level of English is needed to follow this programme?

Our Executive MBA programme is delivered entirely in English. So to follow this programme, you must be able to read, write and discuss in good, professional English.

You’ll also find that across Brussels and Belgium, English is widely spoken – so a good level of English will be useful to you off campus too.

What is the minimum GMAT or GRE score needed to apply for this programme?

If you have a GMAT or GRE score, we will certainly consider it. However, we have developed our own application assessment – the VBAT. The VBAT is a more holistic approach that considers your experience, motivation and ambitions.

You can book a no-obligation call with us to find out more.

Is it possible to apply for an Executive MBA without a Bachelors degree?

No – you need to have a Bachelors or Masters degree from a recognised university to apply for an Executive MBA at Vlerick. You’ll also need to have a reasonable amount of professional experience under your belt. We usually mandate a minimum of four years’ working experience.

Do graduates of the Executive MBA programme get a degree or a diploma?

Yes – when you successfully complete this Executive MBA programme, you’ll have a recognised and valuable Masters in Business Administration degree from a top-ranked business school.

Does the Executive MBA include work placements?

We offer high-quality career guidance to help you make your next move. Our Executive MBA programme features a comprehensive, optional career development track that includes:

  • A personalised development plan
  • Group coaching
  • The option to choose electives
  • Networking opportunities
  • Leadership and personal development
  • Career workshops, coaching and resources
  • Executive coaching

Through this guidance and the whole Executive MBA experience, many of our alumni have made the connections they need to make their next move. Others have started or scaled their own businesses. And some have discovered passions for sectors and specialisations that have opened up new realms of opportunities.

While we don’t directly find jobs for our MBA participants, we provide the guidance, support and opportunities for you to make your next leap.

Does the Executive MBA provide opportunities to work with organisations?

As part of the Executive MBA, all participants do a Knowledge-in-Action project. This is where you take everything you’re learning at Vlerick and apply it to a real-life business challenge. It’s your opportunity to deliver a strategic project, supported by our expert faculty. This could be a project for your current company, or another organisation – or if you’re considering entrepreneurship, it could involve creating a business plan for a startup, buy-out, or buy-in.

How is the Executive MBA programme graded?

Your progress will be assessed a number of different ways throughout this programme, including:

  • Exams
  • Papers
  • Project work
  • Group work
  • Presentations

Assessment is continuous – rather than just happening at the end of the Executive MBA programme. This means you’re always aware of how you’re performing.

How long does the Executive MBA programme take to complete?

Vlerick’s Executive MBA programme takes 18 months to complete. If you have more questions about our Executive MBA, please book a video call with us. We’d love to help.

How much time do Executive MBA participants spend in the classroom or working on projects each week?

Doing an Executive MBA means making a significant investment in time. You’ll need to dedicate an average of 10 to 12 hours per week to your studies for this programme. Face-to-face learning sessions for the Executive MBA take place on Fridays and Saturdays every four weeks – from 8 a.m - 6.30 p.m. These sessions alternate between our Brussels and Ghent campuses.
